Jack Hipp is a Vietnam era veteran and 6th consecutive year commander of the largest American Legion Post (1066) in Nassau County. Jack served his country as a Navy Cryptologist only to then continue serving his community and country as a NYC Detective. Jack is also an active member of the VFW and AMVets. In September 2010, Jack was awarded the National County Distinguished Service to Veterans Award.

With that said, it is no surprise that Jack and Post 1066 raised their hands to host the 2010 Veterans Day Telethon on November 6th. They will kick off the telethon with ceremonies honoring POW/MIA, Memorial Dedications and the proper disposal of damaged flags. We are honored and grateful to be working with them!

American Legion Post 1066 sets the example for other posts to follow with their active outreach program to newly discharged veterans in and around Massapequa, NY. They actively encourage both the newly discharged and those preparing to discharge to reach out to their local American Legion and other veteran organizations immediately so that Service Officers like Jack Ryan can “point you in the right direction” and save you the runaround often encountered at the VA.

Jack Hipp and American Legion Post 1066 exemplify the 4 pillars by which the American Legion stands:

Patriotism and Honor (Americanism)

Each of these pillars encompasses a variety of programs that benefit our nation’s veterans, its servicemembers, their families, the youth in America and ordinary citizens. These programs make a difference in hundreds of thousands of lives each year.

When we talk about American flag, it has always been associated with ‘Old Glory’ and ‘Starry Banner’. This flag is the most respectable and it is recognized throughout the world. Why? The answer is simply because United States is categorized as one of the most powerful and dominant countries from the past history. From the history itself, all the leaders have worked with full dedication and determination to bring independence to United States and to become a respected country to its nation. Until today, it is said that the national flag, American flag is one of the most valuable asset for the States. The design of American flag is simple. In the flag itself, there are 50 stars that represent all different states in US. All the states that joined the Union are represented by the 13 stripes.

So, why is the American flag important?

We have heard around how great is United States in the history from the day the got the Declaration of Independence in 1776. This has given a freedom to the States from the British rules. Since then, it became important to indicate an independent government. It has been spelled out clearly under the United States Constitutions. The flag becomes important to show the pride and joy of United States. All the important elements such as liberty, righteousness, pride, fairness are carried along together in the flag. Besides all these, it also signifies the leaders’ effort, sweat, blood and tears contributed for the success of United States.

The American flag survived in the two World Wars for more than 200 years. The flag is used is a lot of wars as a symbol for unity and fight till the last drop. When the flag is raised, it symbolizes the US pride and winning.

This is flown only on specific events such as Memorial Day, Veteran Day, Independence Day and Flag Day to show its importance. Flag Day is the day when American flag is first accepted. This flag is also displayed throughout the year at the White House in Washington, the Nashville City Cemetery, the Washington Monument and the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial.

It is important to the nation as it keeps all the history of the States. The people of United States are proud of their flag as it symbolizes winning. Today, American flag is respected everywhere especially during international tournaments and competitions.

President Truman signed an Act of Congress on August 3, 1949 designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day. Some confuse Flag Day with July 4th.

Armed Forces Day is the 3rd Saturday in May and is a very appropriate time to fly our flag and show our respect and thanks to the men and women who fight to keep our rights. Not that everyday isn’t a good day!

For me as a Veteran, it is reassuring and gratifying to drive down the street and see our national flag flying proudly in the wind. However, nothing hurts me more sharply than seeing the torn and faded flag flying as if it was a forgotten piece of trash.

Properly Destroy The Old:

For those of you with a tattered flag that you don’t know how to dispose of…There is an official United States Flag Code that expressly outlines the proper flag etiquette for almost any issue that might arise. Please don’t throw her in the garbage can! You can never place the flag in the trash or other disposal. The proper disposal of the United States Of America Flag is by burning. To make it easy, drop her off at your local American Legion, VFW, Military recruiting office or Boy Scout Troop.

Now let’s put up our new flag:

There is a United States Flag Code that gives one the proper use of the flag. One part of the guide that is known to most Americans is that the flag should never touch the ground. You see how careful people are when raising the flag to never touch the earth. To fly it at night one must keep it illuminated throughout the night.

Where to get a new U.S. Flag:

I personally recommend buying your new flag from this flag company. They have by far the best prices and the quality of their flags are tremendous. I will stake my reputation on your satisfaction with your purchase!! (No, I am not an affiliate of this company, just truly love their products!)

There is an official United States Flag Code that expressly outlines the proper flag etiquette for almost any issue that might arise. Among the issues covered is the often asked question as to the correct way to dispose of an American flag that has been worn out to the point of being tattered by the elements.
